When Life Pulls You Back Before Moving You Forward
There are seasons in life when it feels like everything is going in the opposite direction of your prayers.
Plans get delayed. Doors close unexpectedly. Finances stretch thin. Relationships feel distant. At work, you might even face situations that question your integrity or your value. In those moments, it can feel like progress has stopped — or worse, like you’re losing ground entirely.
But what if that backward pull is not meant to destroy you… but to prepare you?
Think about a catapult.
The further it is drawn back, the more distance it can cover when released. The tension is not the end of the journey — it is the preparation for acceleration.
Many times in life, God allows seasons that feel like tension, restriction, or even setback. Not because He has abandoned you, but because He is building the momentum required for where He is taking you next.

Joseph: From Pit to Palace
In Genesis 37–50, Joseph’s life is a clear example of this principle.
Joseph had a dream from God — a vision of leadership and influence. But instead of moving forward immediately into that promise, his life seemed to move backwards:
• He was betrayed by his brothers
• Sold into slavery
• Falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife
• Thrown into prison
Every stage looked like regression.
Imagine explaining to someone that prison was part of your destiny. Yet it was in prison that Joseph met the king’s cupbearer — the connection that eventually brought him before Pharaoh.
The pit was a pull-back.
Slavery was a pull-back.
Prison was a pull-back.
But each one created the positioning and resilience needed for the palace.
When the release finally came, Joseph didn’t just move forward — he launched into purpose.

David: Anointed Before Being Hunted
In 1 Samuel 16, David was anointed king by the prophet Samuel.
Logically, the throne should have followed shortly after.
Instead:
• He returned to tending sheep
• Faced rejection from his own brothers
• Was pursued by King Saul
• Lived in caves as a fugitive
The man chosen to lead a nation became a man running for his life.
It looked like everything was going backwards.
But those wilderness years built:
• Leadership
• Strategy
• Dependence on God
• Emotional strength
David wasn’t being delayed — he was being developed.

Jesus: The Cross Before the Crown
Even our Lord Jesus Christ experienced what looked like the ultimate setback.
In Luke 24:21, the disciples said:
“But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel.”
Their hope seemed lost at the cross.
The One who healed the sick and raised the dead was now crucified. To everyone watching, it looked like defeat. But the cross was not the end — it was the necessary tension before resurrection.
Without the cross, there would be no empty tomb.
Without the suffering, there would be no salvation.
The greatest victory in history came after what appeared to be the greatest loss.

Surviving the Stretch
Moving forward in life isn’t always about visible progress.
Sometimes, it’s about surviving the stretch.
Sometimes, God allows pressure not to break you but to align you. The season that feels like loss of ground may actually be building the force required for your next level.
Scripture reminds us in Romans 8:28:
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Even the backward moments.
Even the silent seasons.
Even the misunderstandings.

Your Release Will Come
If life feels like it’s pulling you back right now, don’t assume it’s the end of your story.
The tension has a purpose.
The setback may be setting you up.
And when the release comes, you won’t just move forward — you’ll launch into the very thing God has been preparing you for all along.
