Come Naked Before God: Nothing to Hide, Everything to Receive

Come Naked Before God — Nothing to Hide

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” — Hebrews 4:16

There is something interesting about the way humanity responded to sin in the Garden of Eden.

Before the fall, Adam and Eve were naked, but they were not ashamed. They were completely exposed, yet they had nothing to hide.

Then they ate the forbidden fruit.

Suddenly, they became aware of their nakedness. They tried to cover themselves, and when they heard God walking in the garden, they hid.

God then asked:

“Where are you?”

God already knew where they were. The question was not because He had lost them. It was an invitation for them to come out of hiding.

And I believe we still do the same thing today.

When we fail, we hide.

When we sin, we cover.

When we are ashamed, we distance ourselves from God.

We try to make ourselves presentable before coming into His presence.

But God is saying something completely different.

Come to Me openly.

Come with your weaknesses.

Come with your failures.

Come with your questions.

Come with your fears.

Come with your brokenness.

Come with the things you are ashamed of.

Come empty.

Not because God approves of our sin, but because He is the only One who can truly deal with what we are trying to hide.

God is not asking us to cover up

When Scripture tells us to come boldly to the throne of grace, it is not telling us to come pretending that everything is fine.

Boldness before God is not arrogance.

It is confidence in His mercy.

It is knowing that we do not have to clean ourselves up before approaching the One who can cleanse us.

We don’t come to God because we have everything together.

We come because we don’t.

We don’t come because we are strong.

We come because He is strong.

We don’t come because we are complete.

We come because He is the One who makes us whole.

Naked, but not physically

When I say that God wants us to come “naked” before Him, I don’t mean physically naked.

I mean spiritually uncovered.

Nothing hidden.

Nothing pretended.

Nothing carefully packaged to make us look better than we really are.

God already sees everything.

He knows the thoughts we don’t tell anyone.

He knows the battles we fight privately.

He knows the tears we wipe away before anyone sees them.

He knows the places in our hearts that we are afraid to expose.

And yet He still says:

Come.

Empty yourself so He can fill you

Perhaps one of the reasons we struggle to receive from God is because we are too busy trying to fill ourselves.

We fill ourselves with pride.

We fill ourselves with our own strength.

We fill ourselves with excuses.

We fill ourselves with appearances.

We fill ourselves with the approval of people.

And sometimes, we even bring all of that into God’s presence.

But God invites us to come empty.

Empty hands.

An open heart.

A surrendered spirit.

Not because He wants us to remain empty, but because He wants to fill us.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10

David wasn’t asking God to help him maintain an appearance.

He was asking God to transform what was happening inside him.

That is the difference between covering and healing.

Covering hides the wound.

God heals the wound.

The question is still: Where are you?

In Genesis, God asked Adam, “Where are you?”

Perhaps that question still speaks to us today.

Not:

“Why did you fail?”

Not:

“Why aren’t you perfect?”

But:

“Where are you?”

Where are you hiding?

What are you afraid to bring before Me?

What are you trying to cover?

What are you carrying alone?

God doesn’t ask because He doesn’t know.

He asks because He wants us to stop hiding.

Come boldly

Hebrews tells us to come boldly to the throne of grace.

Notice that it doesn’t say:

“Come when you have fixed everything.”

It says:

Come.

Come when you need mercy.

Come when you need grace.

Come when you are weak.

Come when you have fallen.

Come when you don’t understand.

Come when you don’t know what to pray.

Come when all you can say is, “God, help me.”

The throne we approach is not merely a throne of judgment.

For those who come through Christ, it is a throne of grace.

And grace means that God meets us in the place where we are and begins the work of transforming us into who He created us to be.

Stop hiding from the One who already sees you

Adam and Eve hid because they became aware of their nakedness.

But God already knew.

And the same is true for us.

You cannot surprise God with your brokenness.

You cannot shock Him with your past.

You cannot reveal something about yourself that He did not already know.

So why hide?

Come to Him.

Openly.

Honestly.

Completely.

Come empty, so He can fill you.

Come broken, so He can restore you.

Come ashamed, so He can cover you with His grace.

Come lost, so He can lead you.

Come weak, so His strength can be revealed in you.

God is not calling us out of hiding to condemn us. He is calling us out of hiding so He can restore us.

The invitation is still open:

Come boldly to the throne of grace.

You have nothing to prove.

Nothing to pretend.

Nothing to hide.

Just come.
